EMBARGOED UNTIL: JULY 27, 1995 (THURSDAY) Public Information Office CB95-138 301-457-2794 301-457-4067 (TDD) Jorge del Pinal 301-457-2403 CENSUS BUREAU PRODUCT ADVISORY EMBARGOED UNTIL: JULY 27, 1995 (THURSDAY) - The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today announced the release of demographic tabulations on the nation's Hispanic-origin population from the March 1994 Current Population Survey. Within the next few days, the tables will be made available via the Internet (http://www.census.gov/pub/pop) as part of the bureau's policy to disseminate more data by electronic means. Computer printouts of each listing now are available from the bureau at a nominal fee. The tabulations are comparable to the data presented in the bureau's 1993 report on the Hispanic population. Topics covered include household structure, education, immigration, labor force, and income and poverty status. Comparable data are shown on Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Central and South Americans, and other Hispanics. The Hispanic tabulations are used in a new chartbook on the nation's Hispanic-origin population called "Hispanics-Latinos: Diverse People in a Multicultural Society," which is being released by the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP), with the assistance of San Francisco State University, as well as the Census Bureau. On Wednesday, July 26, the chartbook will be released by the NAHP at a press conference to be held at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. The briefing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the Zenger Room. Questions on the conference and chartbook should be directed to the NAHP on 202-776-0556 or fax 202-776-0538. Census Bureau Director Martha Farnsworth Riche called the chartbook an "innovative and first-of-its-kind pilot inspired by the Vice President's directive to re-engineer the way the federal government does business." The NAHP was responsible for securing corporate underwriting for design, layout, translation, printing, distribution, and publicity; San Francisco State University Professor Carlos Cordova and Census Bureau demographer Jorge del Pinal wrote the demographic analysis. -X- Editor's note: EMBARGOED UNTIL: JULY 27, 1995 (THURSDAY) - media representatives may request copies of the tabulations from the bureau's Public Information Office by telephone: 301-457-2794; fax: 301-457-3670; or e-mail: pio@census.gov.
