FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 1997 Public Information Office CB97-139 301-457-3030/301-457-3670 (fax) 301-457-4067 (TDD) e-mail: pio@census.gov David Shaw 301-457-1222 e-mail: david.c.shaw@ccmail.census.gov Census Bureau Product Combines Local Data From 12 Popular Products On Single Disc For the first time, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau will assemble upon request on a single CD-ROM virtually all of its demographic, economic and mapping information for any of the nation's 3,140 counties. The new customized CD-ROM, called CountyScopeTM, provides data not only for the county, but also for subcounty areas, such as cities, census tracts, block groups, blocks and ZIP code areas. Windows-based software included with the CD-ROM provides access to the data. "Until now, local government planners, businesses and other customers who needed such a wide range of information for small areas had to obtain a host of separate Census Bureau products," said Martha Farnsworth Riche, Census Bureau director. "CountyScope will save them a great deal of time and money, since it provides all these data in one place." CountyScope contains information such as: - Population and housing unit counts, educational attainment, income, home value and data on recent movers collected from the decennial census. - Business statistics, such as number of establishments, sales, payroll and employment. - Digital data describing map features, which when used with commercial software as part of a geographic information system, can generate detailed maps. - Complete individual responses to decennial census questionnaires, with names and addresses removed to protect the confidentiality of respondents, that enable users to produce their own cross-tabulations. Since CountyScope is a customized product, purchasers can have information for several counties they specify put on the same disc. CountyScope may be purchased from the Census Bureau's Customer Services Branch (301-763-INFO(4636)). The first metropolitan county costs $400; each additional metro county costs $100. The first nonmetro county costs $300 (if no metro county is ordered); additional nonmetro counties cost $60 each when purchased simultaneously.-X-The Census Bureau--pre-eminent collector and provider of timely, relevant, and quality data about the people and economy of the United States. In over 100 surveys annually and 20 censuses a decade, evolving from the first census in 1790, the Census Bureau provides official information about America's people, businesses, industries and institutions.
