         Census Bureau Releases 1996 Population Estimates for
                        Puerto Rico Municipios

     The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released, via the Internet, 
tabulations providing estimates of the population of Puerto Rico and its 78 
municipios as of July 1, 1996.  Population estimates for July 1, 1996, percent 
change in population from 1990 to 1996, and the number of births and deaths 
between 1990 and 1996 are presented for each municipio.

     The titles of the Internet tables are:

  -  PR-96-1 Estimates of the Population of Puerto Rico
     Municipios, July 1, 1996, and Demographic Components of
     Population Change: April 1, 1990 to July 1, 1996
     (includes revised April 1, 1990 census population counts).

  -  PR-96-2 Estimates of the Population of Puerto Rico
     Municipios and Demographic Components of Population Change:
     Annual Time Series, July 1, 1991 to July 1, 1996
     (includes revised April 1, 1990 census population counts).
