This is according to tabulations released today by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau that provide information on the nation's school enrollment by such characteristics as age, race, sex, marital status and family income for preprimary school through college. Highlights for 1995 include: - There were 4.4 million children enrolled in nursery school and 3.9 million enrolled in kindergarten. - Enrollment in elementary school (grades 1-8) was 31.8 million. - High school enrollment totaled 14.9 million. - The annual high school dropout rate (from grades 10-12) was 5.4 percent. - The number of people enrolled in college totaled 14.7 million. About 6 million college students, or 41 percent, were 25 years old and over.
