                   Children Without Health Insurance
Focus of New Census Bureau Study

The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released a new study,
based on previously released data, focusing on the increasing number of
children without health insurance.

The two-page "census brief" is accessible on an embargoed basis on the
Internet at http://www.census.gov/dcmd/www/embargo/embargo.html. After the
release time, it may be found at http://www.census.gov/prod/www/titles.html.

The brief, titled Children Without Health Insurance, CENBRF/98-1,
looks at the increasing number of children under age 18 who had no health
insurance from about 8.2 million in 1987 to 10.6 million in 1996.
Characteristics of these children, which are analyzed in the brief,
include poverty status, race, Hispanic origin, age and, for those who did
have insurance, whether the child had Medicaid or private insurance.

Detailed supporting tables are available on the Internet at
http://www.census.gov/hhes/hlthins/cover96.html.
