The two-page "census brief" is accessible on an embargoed basis on the Internet at http://www.census.gov/dcmd/www/embargo/embargo.html. After the release time, it may be found at http://www.census.gov/prod/www/titles.html. The brief, titled Children Without Health Insurance, CENBRF/98-1, looks at the increasing number of children under age 18 who had no health insurance from about 8.2 million in 1987 to 10.6 million in 1996. Characteristics of these children, which are analyzed in the brief, include poverty status, race, Hispanic origin, age and, for those who did have insurance, whether the child had Medicaid or private insurance.
