Fact of the Day

Counties Vary in Their Reliance on Property Taxes

On average counties depend on property tax for about a quarter of their revenue, but vary greatly from state to state. Counties in Vermont derive 89 percent of their revenue from property tax; in Massachusetts, only 6 percent. Learn about the revenues and expenditures of counties in Finances of County Governments: 2002 (PDF, File Size 1.65 MB), a report available online in PDF or for purchase in print from Customer Services. It is one of the reports based on the 2002 Census of Governments. To find the report online, on the Census Bureau home page click on "Government" (next to "Business") and then on "2002" under Census of Governments. Business "Births," Deaths," "Expansions" Tracked

A new Census Bureau web site tracks business births, deaths, and expansions from one year to the next. The Statistics of U.S. Business uses the Business Information Tracking Series (BITS) to link establishments from year to year. Using this file, we are able to tabulate data for establishment births and deaths and employment expansions and contractions. In 2001, for example, there were 10,789 logging establishments; by 2002 the number had dropped by 815. In that year, births numbered 1,013; deaths, 1,828. Employment saw a 6 percent drop from 2001 to 2002. You can find similar information for industries (4-digit NAICS level) for states and metro areas.

The data were created from the annual County Business Patterns files and developed with the Small Business Administration (SBA), which helped to fund the project. At present we have data for states and metropolitan areas for years between 1997 to 2002. In addition, for 1997 and 2002, you can get receipts data. For a complete time series of U.S. totals and downloadable files in text format, go to the SBA site. To access from the Census Bureau site, come to the top of the home page and select "Business." On the business overview page, look for "Statistics of U.S. Business."

Hot Tip

Downloading From AmericanFactFinder With MS Windows XP OS

When you try to do a download from the American FactFinder, you may encounter a few differences from your downloads made under a previous version of Windows. Our staff is looking to improve the download process in XP, but in the meantime we recommend that you choose the compressed Excel option and save the file that way. XP automatically unzips the file and allows you to open a pop-up box with four files listed. Pick the Excel (.xls) file with the word "data" in the name and double click. This lets you open the file neatly in Excel. For long geographic names (column C), expand the size of the column so the full name is displayed.

For small downloads, the Rich Text Format (RTF), transpose columns and rows option works well. When you select this option, open your downloaded tabulation, select and copy the entire file (hit CTRL and the" A" key simultaneously and then copy) and paste it into your spreadsheet or data base application. This option again distributes the data into separate cells so you do not have to resort to the "text to columns" command. You can still choose the delimited options with no problem, but for small files the RTF option is the simplest way to get the data into your application. It becomes a problem if you have many columns of data, so stick to the transpose option.
