American Indian and Alaska Native Firms
Of the nation's 201,637 firms owned by American Indians or Alaska Natives, 16 percent (32,253) were in construction, tops among industries. The Census Bureau has released these data from the 2002 Survey of Business Owners. The results are available online in a PDF report and soon will be in downloadable form via the American FactFinder. Special Tabulation Shows Effects of 2005 Hurricanes
After the devastating hurricanes of late summer 2005, the states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi showed a decline in population while Texas showed an increase. Read about the details of the pre- and post-hurricane situation in the Census Bureau's special tabulation of population estimates and characteristics in these states and counties impacted by the hurricanes (Katrina, Rita, and Wilma). The tabulation shows data for the 117 counties eligible to receive Individual and Public Assistance (IPA) based on determinations made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The estimates show July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2005 population as well as population as of January 1, 2006. In addition, we have released profiles for areas based on the American Community Survey - data for January to August 2005 and for September to December 2005. The profiles show data on a host of demographics and social, economic, and housing characteristics for the states and the impacted counties.

Los Angeles County Way Ahead in Number of Asian-Owned Firms
Results from the 2002 Survey of Business Owners show that Los Angeles County, the nation's most populous, had almost three times as many Asian-owned firms (140,411) as number two Queens, NY (48,241). In fact, the county had more firms than every state except California and New York. Users can find the results of this survey in a pdf report available online and in downloadable form in American FactFinder. It has data on various race groups (Chinese, Asian Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, and Other Asian) for states, counties, metro areas, and cities. More.

The Census Bureau has released ACS Design and Methodology, a comprehensive summary of the full set of methodologies used in the ACS. The paper covers many topics: sample design, content development, and the language assistance program to data dissemination and user assistance.

State and Local Government Employment and Payroll: 2005. Downloadable Internet tables with data on the number of government civilian employees and their gross payrolls. The report shows most full-time equivalent employees work in education. 2005 American Housing Survey National Public Use Microdata File. Microdata (i.e., household records with identifying information removed) from this survey enable users to generate their own tabulations on a wide range of housing topics; e.g., housing costs, satisfaction with neighborhood and the frequency of repairs made. The file consists of records of individual responses to the survey, with identifying information removed. Also available in statistical tabulations and as PDF reports.
