Fact of the Day
New Population Estimates Available!
The Population Estimates Program publishes total resident population estimates and demographic components of change (births, deaths, and migration) each year (containing a reference date of July 1). According to recently released population estimates, Texas gained more people than any other state between July 1, 2005 and July 1, 2006 (579,275). Florida and California followed, gaining 321,697 and 303,402, respectively. Rounding out the top five states were Georgia (231,388) and Arizona (213,311). Meanwhile, Arizona surpassed Nevada as the nation's fastest-growing state over the period, with its population rising 3.6 percent. Nevada ranked second, as its population climbed by 3.5 percent, followed by Idaho (2.6 percent), Georgia (2.5 percent) and Texas (2.5 percent).
The South and West again monopolized the list of fastest-growing states with Utah, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, and South Carolina rounding out the top 10. Colorado and South Carolina replaced Delaware and Oregon on the list this year.

75 Percent Owner-Occupied Rate in Puerto Rico
In Puerto Rico, 74.5 percent of the occupied housing units are owner-occupied. In the U.S. the ownership rate is 66.9 percent. Only a few states have ownership rates comparable to Puerto Rico's: Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and West Virginia.
The findings come from the Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS), comparable to the U.S. American Community Survey. The 2005 data are the first for Puerto Rico to be released based on the survey. Data from the PRCS are also available for areas meeting the 65,000 population threshold: metro areas, municipios, urbanas, and the resident commissioner district. Look for the data in the American Community Survey.

Fact of the Day
Urban Poverty
High poverty rates (20 percent or more) affect many of the nation's cities, especially the larger ones, according to data from the 2005 American Community Survey. Geographic Comparison Table GCT 1701 in American FactFinder lists almost 500 cities (all 65,000 or more population) and provides the percent of people in poverty.
Among the 20 largest cities, Detroit (our 11th most populous city) has the highest poverty rate (31.4 percent). Number 10 most populous, San Jose, has the lowest at 10.0 percent, below the 12.4 poverty rate for the nation as a whole. In addition, San Jose has by far the highest median household income ($70,921) of the top 20 most populous cities, well above the U.S. average of $46,242. Detroit's median household income is lowest among the top 20 at $28,069.
The "Geographic Comparison Tables" (GCTs) in FactFinder are a valuable resource you should not overlook. They provide tabulations for groups of related areas (e.g., all urbanized areas in the nation). Unlike the "Detailed Tables" in FactFinder, the GCTs often provide percentages, enabling users to better make comparisons among similar areas. If you need an absolute number, go to "Detailed Tables"; if you need percentages, try the GCTs, the "Quick Tables" and the "Ranking Tables."
Correction: No, the "Other" Rochester!
In the November 3, 2006 Census Product Update, we stated incorrectly that Rochester, New York, leads metro areas in physicians per 100,000 people. In fact, Rochester, Minnesota, leads in this category. The editors of the Census Product Update apologize to our readers for this error.

American Community Survey Profiles - News in Brief
In mid-November, the Census Bureau released data profiles for about 200 race, ethnic, and ancestry groups in areas of one million or more population. These profiles are based on the 2005 American Community Survey (ACS) and are accessible in the American FactFinder. A profile exists only when a group numbers 65,000 in the area under consideration.
Whenever the Census Bureau issues a major data release like this, we usually do a press release summarizing the findings and include other helpful reference information. Even if you're not a reporter hot on a story, you may find this information useful. The press release for these data is accompanied by a media toolkit, an ACS users guide, links to the detailed tables, the release schedule, links to the forms included in ACS mailings, etc. Especially useful is a presentation on the data done by Census Bureau staffer Ken Bryson showing what's included and how to access it in FactFinder or FTP.
To find our news releases, just click on the "Releases" link on the Census Bureau homepage.
