Reasons People Do Not Work
Of the estimated 227 million people 15 years and older who resided in the United States in the first quarter of 2004, nearly 79 million (35 percent) had not worked at a paid job for at least the prior four consecutive months. Retirement (38 percent) and school attendance (19 percent) were the most commonly reported reasons. Chronic illness or disability was the main reason for almost 1 in 7 (15 percent) nonworkers. Taking care of children or others accounted for 13 percent. Around 6 percent cited an economic reason for not working. Find out the other reasons and much more in Reasons People Do Not Work: 2004.

Fifth of a series of reports that have attempted to measure changes in housing affordability for families (current owners and current renters) and unrelated individuals. The data in this report were collected from October 2002 through January 2003 in the sixth wave (interview) of the 2001 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).

Income in the United States
Real median household income rose between 2005 and 2006 in 15 states and the District of Columbia, while no states experienced a decline. Seven states that experienced increases were in the West (Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington), six were in the South (Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina and Texas) and two were in the Midwest (Kansas and South Dakota). Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut had the highest median household incomes in 2006, while Mississippi and West Virginia had the lowest. On-Line Catalog Sales Discontinued
Because most Census Bureau data are available online from the American FactFinder or via FTP download, the Customer Services Center (CSC) has discontinued e-sales through it's online catalog. Product listings are still available through the catalog but orders must be placed by calling the CSC at 1-800-923-8282 or 301-763-INFO (4636). The CSC is open Monday-Thursday 8:30 am-5:30 pm E.S.T.; Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm E.S.T. We are closed on Tuesday from 1-2 pm for staff training.
