Almost a Quarter of New One-Family Homes Completed in 2004 Have Three or More Bathrooms

New Census Bureau statistics show that about 361,000 of the 1.5 million new one-family homes completed in 2004 have three or more bathrooms. About 592,000 (39 percent) have two bathrooms and another 508,000 have two and a half baths (38 percent). The West has the highest percentage of three or more bathroom homes (29 percent); the Northeast has the lowest percentage (18 percent). The statistics come from Characteristics of New Housing, an annual data series based on the Survey of Construction that yields the quarterly New Residential Construction reports. The data show new one-family home completed, multi-unit buildings and the units they contain, new one-family houses sold, and contractor-built houses started. The web site has an interactive tool that allows you to select the kind of housing and then to easily display historical data on a variety of features (floor size, A/C, heating fuel, primary and secondary wall material, foundation type, etc.). Come to the Census Bureau home page and click on "Subjects A to Z" and then on "C" for "Construction Statistics." Click on "New Housing Characteristics" to access the data.
