Fewest Elderly in Alaska

According to our July 1, 2004 population estimates, Alaska, 47th in total population, is the state that has the fewest people 65 years old and over. Almost 42,000 hardy seniors call Alaska home. Of these only 3,500 are 85 years old and older.

To obtain the latest state population estimates, come to our "Estimates" page (next to "People" on the home page) and place your cursor over the orange menu bar. Select "age," then "state estimates by demographic characteristics," and then look in the popular tables box for the table on selected age groups.

At the end of December, we will release the 2005 state population estimates; in the spring, we will release the age estimates for states.
