Women in the Northeast More Likely to Be Childless Than Women in Other Regions
Data from the June 2004 Current Population Survey show that women age 15 to 44 living in the Northeast were more likely to be childless (48 percent) than women in the South (43 percent), Midwest (44 percent), and West (46 percent). They also had the fewest children per 1,000 women (58 percent). These results come from the annual Fertility of American Women report [PDF; 496 KB]. In two states, Massachusetts and Vermont, the rate was over 50 percent, as it was in the District of Columbia. The fertility release consists of a PDF report discussing the highlights along with detailed and historical tables .
