New Data Available for Group Quarters Population

Nationally, 8.1 million people were living in group quarters in 2006, or about 2.7 percent of the total population, according to the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program. New data from the American Community Survey provide the first social and economic characteristic profiles of people living in group quarters - such as adult correctional facilities, college dorms and nursing homes - in nearly three decades. These data also include profiles of more than 100 race and ethnic group iterations such as blacks, Chinese, and Mexicans. In addition, profiles for 72 ancestry groups, from Afghani to Welsh, are also available.
