MAF/TIGER Enhancements Program
MAF/TIGER Enhancements Program
The Census Bureau will conduct a multiyear effort to enhance and improve the Census Bureau’s Master Address File (MAF) and geographic database (TIGER)
What is the MAF?
An accurate and up to date inventory of all known living quarters in the United States, Puerto Rico, and associated Island Areas.
What is TIGER?
A street center-line “digital map” (geographic data base) of the entire United States, Puerto Rico, and the associated Island Areas
MAF/TIGER Enhancements Program Objectives
American Community Survey (ACS)
Need for American Community Survey
-
Rapid demographic changes in recent years
-
Expectation that such changes will continue
-
Need more frequent data to meet needs
Overview of American Community Survey
-
Collect decennial census long-form data every month instead of only once each decade
-
Release tabulations of these data on a yearly basis rather than only once each decade
-
Allows Census Bureau to remove the long form from the 2010 Census--this provides opportunity to restructure and simplify census effort
-
Field representatives collecting ACS data help keep Master Address File (MAF) up to date
