data needed. Each variable is listed alphabetically. Both the
type of entry being tabulated (universe), which is shown in
italics, and the relevant table numbers appear under the variable
heading. If the entry variable is cross tabulated by another
variable, the variable of cross tabulation is indicated beneath
the universe and is preceded by the word "by." The index entries
for each variable are arranged by universe, then by variable of
cross tabulation, if any.
