Geography

The Census Bureau uses two tools to ensure that the people of the United States are not only counted but counted in the right place. The Atlanta Region's Geography staff are responsible for keeping those tools up-to-date for Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. The first of these tools, the Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing® system, or TIGER®; is a set of geographic databases used to generate maps and other products which support data collection and tabulation. The second tool, the Master Address File, is the Census Bureau's list of all living quarters and their geographic locations.

Our Geography staff's mission is ensure that the TIGER® system and the Master Address File for the Atlanta region contain current street and address information, political boundaries, and statistical boundaries. We work through partnerships with our local and state governments and the United States Postal Service.
